How to effectively deal with Stress?

How to effectively deal with Stress? Being stressed out has become a part of daily life and with so many things being demanded from us. In addition to our unrealistic expectations of ourselves, of our favorite loved ones and society. In general, we are constantly trying to keep up. Here are a few things to remember in order to tame your stress:

Is This Situation Something You Can Really Control A 100%?

Our modern society tries to teach us that everything is within our control. And that we can change it all if we work hard enough. This is true to a large extent. But I also believe this creates much unnecessary stress on us. There are factors, even if we try our very very best; we won’t be able to control. Imagine this far fetched example. You are searching for a job, you find an opportunity and you snag an interview. You are stressing yourself like crazy. Like buying a new suit, fixing your resume and talking to yourself in the mirror. The morning of your interview, you are so nervous and stressed you can’t even eat. Anyways, you get there and you say everything that you planned on saying. Your appearance is impeccable.

However, your interviewer has a deep aversion to the color blue suit that you are wearing. Maybe it reminds them of a drowning incident at the beach. The problem is you’re all decked out in your brand new blue suit. You’re competent and deserve the position. But the interviewer just can’t get past the color blue, he/she doesn’t like you and you don’t get the position. Although exaggerated, this color blue could be anything. Maybe they hate where you went to college, but these are all things which are completely out of your control.

Did this ever happen in other areas of your life where you try hard doing something nice or thoughtful but get a cold response? If it did it’s simple because they aren’t things the other person sees as nice or thoughtful. So much stress over things you cannot control. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be nice or think of others, but remember that you cannot control everything, including a person response.

Trying to control people and their actions

We think we can control situations, people and their action by being a tyrant or a dictator. Like thinking or saying Why don’t people do as I say? Why don’t my parents get along? How dare this cashier be rude to me? Why won’t this traffic move faster? All these can’t be achieved on a long term basis. Things like these run through our heads all day long and can be a source of significant stress.

Accept that not everything is in your control. I’m not saying to be complacent and not hope for things to bring you peace. You can also try your very best and accept the rest as being beyond your control. As this can lessen your stress in a major way. If you’re religious, you can also trust God and find peace whenever dealing with difficult situations. “Now May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.” (Thessalonians 3:16) is such a comforting scripture for me whenever I am faced with difficult issues. If you aren’t religious then try meditations, yoga, walk in nature or any activity that will bring you peace. Did you know that relinquishing trying to control people can be freeing and much less stressful?

Remember how to effectively deal with Stress is not trying to control people or situations. Being Stressed Out Derives From Projecting Into The Future Or Being Stuck In The Past. Saying words like “should have, “could have” or “would have” are all bondage words. Instead you could use words like “suppose to” or next time” all you have now is the present, close your eyes, breathe deeply and bring yourself back mentally and physically to the present. You can choose to use the present anyway you want to better your situation. Because it is the only thing really within your control. ‘You are too Bless to be Stress”

  1. Yes, it’s so true. We can have less stress when we remember that we can not control others, but we can control ourselves.
