Five Quick reminder tips for Hurricane preparedness

Five quick reminder tips for hurricane preparedness. Hurricane season ends on November 30th. Since this year we have not had much of an active hurricane season. But now Hurricane Ian is heading to the central Florida area. I have gone through 2 of the worse Hurricanes. The first was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 when I was living in Kingston, Jamaica. And the second was Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when I was living in Miami, Florida. Both times those were devastating for me. My Family and I almost lost our lives during Hurricane Andrew. So, It’s always a panic time whenever expecting a Hurricane.

Although, Hurricane Ian is expecting to be a Category 1-2 when it makes landfall here in the central Florida area. I am not taking it lightly. I can never be too prepared for any emergency but I can be under prepared. That is why it is important to have these Five quick reminder tips for hurricane preparedness.

Water

Water is essential so make sure to have enough drinking water. At least three days’ worth for each of your family members. Water usually is the the first thing that sells out in stores. If you were unable to stock up on cases of water. Then boil tap water before the water goes off. Then store that water in available containers. Any water is better than no water.

Medications

Check to make sure that you have all your prescription medications fill-ups to prevent doing without. You might are not be taking prescribed medication. But dealing with hurricanes can bring on stress. So having over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies for headaches, fever, or an upset stomach are good options as well. I love to drink ginger tea so that’s a must-have for me.

Flashlights & Batteries

Losing electricity and not knowing when it will be back on is one thing to experience. You will need to have enough emergency lighting to get you through those dark times and keep you at ease. Grab flashlights and batteries. Even glow-in-dark sticks and toys for your kids is helpful with giving off light.

canned foods

Canned foods are non-perishable foods. These won’t go bad during power outages. Which most times happens during hurricanes. Try to stock up on many canned meat foods as possible. Like tuna, corn beef, sardines, mackerel, and any of your favorite canned meats. Don’t forget to grab your kid some canned spaghetti and ravioli. There are some fruits that can go without being refrigerated like Bananas, avocado, apple, oranges, mangoes and tangerines.

Emergency Numbers

Make sure to have all emergency numbers handy along with your Family safety plan. Some numbers to have readily available are 911 and non-emergency local numbers for your city police office. Keep in mind that if weather conditions are bad. You might not get help right away from city personnel until conditions are safe. So remember to have an emergency kit prepared. Family and close friends to check on. Your doctor’s phone number and your property/car insurance contact numbers are readily available after the hurricane.

Keeping safe during a hurricane is the number one priority. So make sure to be prepared before the storm. I have linked more information on Hurricane preparedness here. https://www.floridadisaster.org/info/
